| Jiangnan University, or Southern Yangtze University (SYTU) is one of China’s prestigious universities listed on the national Project 211*. The university was founded in 1902 under the name of San Jiang Normal School, the same cultural origin with Nanjing University and Southeast University. SYTU functions under the direction of the State Ministry of Education.
* Project 211 is a national program approved by the Chinese government that was started in 1995. The government substantially and intensively invests in about 100 prestigious universities selected from 1,794 higher learning institutions nationwide to improve their overall capacity. |

SYTU or Jiangnan University (江南大学) is a university located in the beautiful city - Wuxi, a city combining a natural landscape and a 3,000-years history with plenty of urban attractions. One of its newly established campuses is nearby the Lake Taihu, dubbed with “Eco-campus” and landscaped with beautiful greens, elegant gardens, unique bridges and tranquil streams.
When it was founded in 1902, San Jiang Normal School was just a small school providing teacher training courses. Gradually the school grew and finally formed a comprehensive university, the National Central University in 1928 and Nanjing University in 1949. In 1950s, the university was divided into several portions and some of those portions merged to other academic fractions to form a number of current university origins, including Nanjing University, Southeast University, Nanjing Agricultural University, and Nanjing Normal University. SYTU was largely founded in the period and was later renamed Wuxi Institute of Light Industry in 1958, Wuxi University of Light Industry in 1995, and Southern Yangtze University in 2001.
SYTU was selected by the State Ministry of Education from 1,794 higher leaning institutions nationwide as one of 100 prestigious universities supported by the national “Project 211” . The university comprises 18 schools and departments, offering more than 60 specialties for undergraduate programs, 59 for master's programs, and 21 for doctoral programs.
The university has nearly two thousand staff and faculty members, including more than 700 professorships and 3 most respected academicians of China Academy of Engineering. There are about 20,000 undergraduate and 3,500 graduate students. 350 international students registered in 2006.
Covering 208 hectares of land along the lakeshore of the Lake Taihu, one of the university’s new campuses has recently started to accept students and its completion of construction will provide the university an opportunity to achieve a faster and sustainable development in the future.
Southern Yangtze University, with its centennial achievements of several distinguishing disciplines, is now striving for even greater success. |
